Who We Are

Home Forward Iowa is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit housing and services advocacy organization, advocating on behalf of Iowans experiencing homelessness. Our focus is addressing homelessness in all of Iowa’s 99 counties. We work with many agencies across the state, and serve as the technical assistance provider for coordinated entry in most of Iowa. HFI’s primary initiatives include advocacy, capacity building, and creating connections.

The Need

Too many Iowans face homelessness crises each year. According to the Institute for Community Alliances, 11,777 Iowans experienced homelessness in 2019. Homelessness is directly affected by the availability of affordable housing, and according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Iowa has a shortage of 53,135 available rental homes that are affordable for extremely low income renters.

Our Vision

We imagine a state where homelessness is prevented through connecting households with resources, where each community has a short-term shelter plan in place, where those who become homeless are quickly sheltered and moved into housing, where communities ensure their housing stock is adequate, and where developers are required to provide affordable housing.
